Inspired by the Animal Planet show, "It's Me or the Dog", with trainer Victoria Stillwell, I realized dog training would be my dream job by helping people and dogs to live peacefully together. But where to begin? My first trainee trainer was a service dog group that had a booth at Petco one Saturday morning when I stopped by for supplies. They trained trainers and got me interested in service dog training. After a few months of learning from them, I decided a more formal education was in order, so signed up for the Animal Behavior College's dog trainer program, where I received certification as a dog trainer. I then apprenticed under expert dog/service dog trainer Dee Bogetti, of Richmond, VA. (For more information about Dee Bogetti, please visit her website at www.deethedogtrainer.com.) I've since attended dog training seminars, read many books, taken many online courses, and gotten lots of experience working with puppies and pet dogs while keeping abreast of the most current positive reinforcement techniques.
Other than the puppy classes taught on a volunteer basis at a local dog club, and public access training done where appropriate for individual experiences, my training is done in client homes to keep the training pertinent to the dogs and their owners and to keep the dogs at ease for more enjoyable learning.
