Inspired by the Animal Planet show, "It's Me or the Dog", with trainer Victoria Stillwell, I realized dog training would be my dream job by helping people and dogs to live peacefully together. But where to begin? My first trainee trainer was a service dog group that had a booth at Petco one Saturday morning when I stopped by for supplies. They trained trainers, and got me interested in service dog training. After a few months learning from them, I decided a more formal education was in order, so signed up for the Animal Behavior College's dog trainer program, where I received certification as a dog trainer. I then apprenticed under expert dog/service dog trainer Dee Bogetti, of Richmond, VA. (For more information about Dee Bogetti, please visit her website at www.deethedogtrainer.com.) I've since attended dog training seminars, read lots of books, and taken lots of on-line courses, keeping abreast of the most current positive reinforcement techniques. But most importantly, I have been gaining experience with years of training service dogs, pet dogs, and teaching puppy classes.
Other than the puppy classes, which are taught on a volunteer basis at a local dog club, I train in the dogs' homes in order to put them at ease and better understand their environment.
Please contact me if you would like to know more about positive reinforcement training, are having trouble getting your dog to behave, or would like help obtaining and/or training a service dog. Thank you for visiting DogSense!
